Lesson 1: What is The Gospel?

Etymology of The Gospel

The word “Gospel” comes from the Greek word Euangelion.

• Eu – Good
• Angelion – Message (derived from Angelos, which means messenger, translated into English as Angel)

When we put the two words together, it translates to good news.

People in the ancient Roman world commonly used this word. It was used to announce a great victory in battle. They also used it to declare the birth of a new Emperor. The Angelos (messengers) would run into the city shouting, “Euangelion, Euangelion!” In Christian parlance, we use this word to announce the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ as King.

The Old Testament Foundation

We have established that the word “Gospel” translates from a Greek word. We also know that the writers of the Old Testament used Hebrew, while the New Testament writers used Greek. Because of this, one might view the Gospel solely as a New Testament concept. However, the Old Testament gives critical context for New Testament writings. The prophets actually laid the foundation of this word in the Old Testament.

In Isaiah 40:9, the prophet uses the phrase “good tidings” to announce God:

“O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”” (Isaiah 40:9, NKJV)

We also see this truth in Isaiah 52:7:

“How beautiful upon the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who proclaims peace, Who brings glad tidings of good things, Who proclaims salvation, Who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”” (Isaiah 52:7, NKJV)

So, based on these verses, the Gospel simply means: “Our God reigns!”

Reflection

In this chaotic world, no matter the storm that rages, we are fully secure. We rest in the fact that our God reigns over all. (insert praise break)

In upcoming lessons, we will explore the Gospel in a broader context. For now, I want you to meditate on these words: “Our God reigns!” He reigns over sin. He reigns over sickness. He reigns over the grave, and He reigns over (insert any word). Our God reigns! Hallelujah!
