Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to fitness challenges. But if there’s one thing Streaktember has taught me, it’s that consistency doesn’t mean perfection. It means showing up, even when life throws in twists you didn’t plan for. And today, Streaktember Day 26, was definitely one of those twisty days.
The Baby Wake-Up Call
I woke up at 4:00 a.m., ready to lace up my shoes and hit the treadmill. But guess who had different plans? My wonderful baby. Just as I was about to get up, he started crying. Loud, persistent, heart-wrenching cries that every mom knows can’t be ignored.
Instead of running, I spent the next two hours rocking, patting, and whispering in his ear, hoping he’d go back to sleep. He finally drifted off around 6:00 a.m., but by then it was time for my oldest child to wake up for school. And of course, the cries from her brother had disturbed her sleep too, so she woke up cranky. She had her own little morning drama, dragging her feet through getting ready and eating breakfast.
By the time I finally dropped her off at the bus stop, I was mentally and physically drained.
The Question: Run or Sleep?
When I got back home, I had a choice to make. Do I crawl into bed and catch up on much-needed sleep, or do I honor the commitment I’ve made to myself in this challenge?
In that moment, I pictured my long to-do list for the day. I knew that if I didn’t get my run in right away, it would haunt me all day. And so, I chose to run.
The Unexpected Nap
I was a little over 1 mile in, just starting to feel good, when I heard the baby crying again. I immediately jumped off the treadmill and went to him. At least I had reached my minimum goal of 1 mile, which gave me peace of mind.
Since it was still early, I thought I could rock him back to sleep and then power through the rest of my tasks. But here’s where the twist came in: I sat down with him, started rocking gently, and the next thing I knew, I opened my eyes and saw 9:30 a.m. on the clock.
Wait, what? How did I sleep for almost two hours in the middle of the morning with a long list of things to do? It was shocking, but also proof that my body needed the rest.
Why I’m Glad I Didn’t Procrastinate
Here’s the silver lining: if I had postponed my run until later in the day, I would have missed it completely. That nap would have erased my window of opportunity. But because I got up and ran first, even though it wasn’t the perfect session, I was able to keep my streak alive.
And that’s what Streaktember is all about. Not perfect mornings. Not flawless runs. But discipline, consistency, and the determination to keep moving forward despite life’s curveballs.
Four Days to Go!
It blows my mind that I’m only four days away from finishing this 30-day challenge. Every day has been different, and honestly, I’ve probably had more “twist days” than normal days. But each of those challenges has made this journey more memorable.
As I type this late into the night, I’m so grateful I didn’t let today slip away. If you’re reading this and thinking about your own goals, let this be your reminder: don’t wait for the perfect moment. Take action in the messy, unpredictable moments, because that’s where real progress is made.
I’ll see you on Streaktember Day 27. Let’s finish strong!
